Mum's Review of North States Superyard XT Gate Play Yard by North States Industries

As for using North States Superyard XT Gate Play Yard as a child's playpen, this is alright in a pinch, but will only really contain a very small child who cannot climb.  What we did use this for was to keep our toddler away from the outside grill and the fire crackers on the Fourth of July.  After we lit the grill, we were able to use this gate to section off a nice area for grilling and keep our little one out of harm's way.  For this, the gate is worth having.

I had both this playpen and a baby trend soft-sided playpen and I liked the traditional soft-sided one better.  In fact, I never used this as a playpen.  I really only used it as a temporary baby gate.

Primarily best for dogs...

This play yard is great for puppy dogs learning to go poo poo on paper (and eventually outside).  If you put puppy paper down in one corner, and a crate in another, you will have room for a food bowl, but you will want to invest in a good rubber mat to line the bottom.

We found that our puppies didn't learn to escape right away, but dogs are smart and after a while, they learned to either lift a corner and sneak under this. One little puppy would stack up bedding in an attempt to get over the sides, so be aware.  :)

Appearance:

The playpen is made of grey plastic, and looks like a grey plastic kennel.  It has no bottom or top.  It has no door, but the sides come apart relatively easily.  To me, it looked ok, but I'm not the sort of person who has to have everything match.  If you like everything to match your decor, this probably won't float your boat.

Construction:

For a plastic pen, this is well made.  Again, there is not a top, bottom, or door.  The playpen folds up to be about 10 inches thick.  It would be very difficult to break this.

Ease of Use:

One person can set this up, but the sides can be difficult to push into place at times, so I liked to have my husband mess with it.

I found this to be very easy to use and it fit in our trunk.

Price:

This playpen/  dog crate is priced a little below $70, but is often on sale on Amazon for $50.  Check here to see what the price is today.

Safety:

This gate/ playpen is pretty safe.  Since it doesn't have a door, there isn't anything to pinch fingers in.

Cons:

This would be great with a door and it's not very pretty.
